We all know that caring for our wellbeing is vital. But, as mums, we are often so busy looking after everyone else that we forget to take care of our own wellbeing. We’ve got limited time and energy and a to-do list that never seems to end. However, prioritising our own health and wellbeing can be one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our families. And even if you’re a busy mum juggling work, homeschooling and everything else, with a bit of intention, you can take small steps towards elevating your wellbeing today.

What is wellbeing?

Wellbeing is the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy. Everyone is different so what one person feels is their perfect state of wellbeing may be completely different from another person. Yet, there are some common strategies that most mums should be able to implement to increase their wellbeing.

4 achievable strategies to boost your wellbeing

1. Care for your basic needs

These basics include regularly eating nutritious foods, hydrating and moving your body.

To make this happen, always keep healthy snacks in your pantry or fridge, have your water bottle with you wherever you go and eat when you give food to your kids. You can stay active by doing fun physical activities with your family such as playing soccer, dodge ball or another active game, or going for a bike ride or walk in nature.

2. Prioritise bedtime

As parents we are often strict about our kids’ bedtime routine but neglect our own. We all know that a lack of sleep makes us more stressed, on edge and impatient. Creating a bedtime routine doesn’t need to be hard. You can start by:

  • Adjusting the blue light on your devices
  • Not using any electronic devices 30 minutes before bedtime
  • Performing a relaxing activity such as a warm bath, reading a book, meditating or drinking a chamomile tea

3. Focus on activities that give you flow

What are the activities that fill you up, give you energy and flow? You are in the state of flow when you’re totally immersed in a task or activity, solely focused on your progress and what’s going on here and now without realising how much time has passed. It could be anything, playing sport, playing a musical instrument or doing something creative like drawing, painting etc. Consider the things that you used to love doing before having kids. How can you incorporate them into your weekly schedule? Initially, it could be as little as 15min to get you started.

4. Be gentle with yourself

We all have difficult days when we feel more stressed… And on those days it’s important to acknowledge that you’re having a hard time and lower your expectations, giving yourself shame-free permission to skip the chores, order take away and increase screen time for your kids. Remind yourself that you’re only human and you’re doing the best you can, and that tomorrow will be a better day.
